HACX (tm) - Shareware Version -Contents: Introduction: File Package: Installation: Registered Version Info: More Info: Legal Notices: Appendix A: Upgrading Doom II (tm) to Version 1.9 -Introduction: HACX (tm) is an Add-On game for DOOM II (tm) and it cannot be played without a registered version of DOOM II (tm). It is required that Version 1.9 of DOOM II (tm) be used. If you have an earlier version, see Appendix A: Upgrading DOOM II (tm) to Version 1.9 HACX (tm) is the first game from Banjo Software, a group of highly talented people who are dedicated to making their mark in the computer gaming community while having a whole lot of fun doing it. We really hope you enjoy playing HACX (tm) as much as we enjoyed making it. The Shareware version of HACX (tm) is intentionally designed NOT to be used to make "custom" levels. As it is our goal to bring you more advanced and exciting games in the future, making custom levels using the sharware version would harm our ability to achieve those goals... which would be a loss to all of us. Therefore, we ask that designers and programers refrain from creating any material or tools that would work with the shareware version of HACX (tm). The registered version of HACX (tm) is DOOM II (tm) compatible, which means that levels you've designed in the past, as well as new levels, can easily be made to work with HACX (tm) and, in most cases, with the same tools that are used now to create DOOM II (tm) add-ons. The Sharware version of HACX (tm) may be freely distributed by any medium providing that the file package retain the name HACXSWxx.ZIP, with xx being the current version number, and that all of the original files are included in an unmodified form. None of the copyrighted material in the Registered version or the Shareware version is to be distributed with your "custom" creations. This includes, but is not limited to, graphics, audio sounds and music, and engine behavior and modifications. Instead, simply include the phrase "Requires HACX" to any "custom" creations that are made and distributed. -File Package: The Shareware file package (HACXSxxx.ZIP) should contain the following files and ONLY the following files. If the file package you received differs from this list, do not distribute this file package to others as it has been altered. If you feel this is the case, notify the person(s) you received the file package from that the copy you received is not official and that they should not continue to distribute it. An official copy of the HACX (tm) Shareware files may be downloaded from the sites listed in the "-More Info:" section of this document. If you downloaded the shareware version in small packages or the package is split up on disks, Unzip all of the ZIP packages into the same temporary directory. Go to the DOS prompt for the temporary directory (example C:\TEMP\> ) and type INSTALL. (NOTE: If you are installing the Shareware version from the Registered version CD of HACX, just go to the SHARE directory and run INSTALL.) The installation program will start by checking for your copy of DOOM II (tm), and to verify that you have DOOM II (tm) version 1.9. If you do not have version 1.9, see Appendix A: Upgrading Doom II to Version 1.9. If you do not have a copy of DOOM II (tm), it is still available at most fine software outlets or directly from Id Software, at 1-800-ID-GAMES Once installed, it'll ask if you wish to play. On any future games, go to your DOOM2 directory DOS prompt and type HACXSW to start the game. All of the startup parameters and codes you are used to using with DOOM II (tm) will work with HACX (tm). The internal cheat codes, that are typed while playing the game, have been altered, we want you to play the game! For a complete set of command line codes and parameters, consult the README.TXT file that comes with DOOM II (tm) or consult the DMFAQ166 documents, which is easily available from the internet. We've spent much time in making the installation and playing of HACX (tm) as painless to you, the end-user, as possible. But, if you have any problems, check the TXT files included in your file package for information that may answer your questions. -Registered Version Info The Registered Version of HACX (tm) will include 21 big and mean levels, over 500 totally new graphics and 5 new weapons, 5 new monsters, music and sounds not found in the Shareware Version. The Registered Version will also include a EDITING.TXT file containing DOOM II (tm) to HACX (tm) conversion details including a complete "Things" list. For more information on the Registered Version, as well as how to get it, consult the file ORDER.TXT found in your DOOM2 directory after installation. -More Info: Important web sites Banjo Software, Inc. - Home site for HACX (tm) and HACX (tm) related files http://www.accesscom.net/banjo Id Software, Inc. - Home site for DOOM (R) and Doom II (tm) related files http://www.idsoftware.com/ Nostromo's Place - Home site of the 3D Gamer's Group News where you can get signed up to be informed of any HACX (tm) updates, patch information, etc. via E-mail http://www.sonic.net/~nostromo/ -Legal Notices: HACXtm is not affiliated with, nor will it be supported by Id Software, Inc. Appendix A: Upgrading DOOM II to Version 1.9 If you need to upgrade your copy of DOOM II (tm) to version 1.9, you can get the upgrade patch files directly from Id Software's site or from Banjo Software's site. The files you need will depend on what version of DOOM II (tm) your currently have. To determine the current version of your game, start DOOM II (tm) the way you normally would. You'll notice a colored stripe at the top of the screen. Displayed in this stripe is the version of your game. (Note: Version 1.666 is actually Version 1.7) Once you've determined the version of the game you have, you can get the appropriate patch files. Keep in mind that patch files quite often must be installed in stages. For example, if you have V1.7, you will first need to run the patch to upgrade it to V1.7a followed by another patch to upgrade it to V1.9. So, it's important that you read the information carefully at the file sites to determine whether you are getting the correct patch files. Installing patches is extremely easy. Included in the patch file package will be a file called PATCH.ZIP. Unzip this file directly into your DOOM2 directory. Then go to the DOS prompt for your DOOM2 directory and type PATCH. If you've run a previous upgrade patch, you may get a message during the unzipping process of the next upgrade patch asking if you wish to overwrite the old patch files. Just tell it "yes". Note: Patch files can take a considerable amount of time to upgrade your game. There may be extremely long pauses with seemingly no activity, except maybe some hard drive activity. This is normal! Do NOT interupt or abort an upgrade patching process early if possible. Happy Gaming!
